You wake to the sound of the loons calling to
each other across your private lake.
Lying in bed you watch a bald eagle sail high above the mist over the
lake; another day in paradise.
Breakfast is pancakes (made with the blueberries you collected
yesterday) in front of the wood stove.
There are decisions to be made: will you spend
the day hiking along the wooded trails, trout fishing the rushing streams, or
kayaking up to the millpond to check on the resident beavers? Perhaps it would be nice to spend a few
hours sailing around the lake in one of the two sunfish or swimming out to the
swim dock.
After the morning activities, everyone gathers
together again to have lunch in the gazebo overlooking Randal’s lake. In the afternoon, some of you decide to take
a scenic drive along Lobster Bay to the ocean (3 miles away) and stop at the
Acadian museum in West Pubnico to learn about the
local history in this predominantly French Acadian region. Others choose to play a round of golf at the
local course.
Home again for pre-dinner gin and tonics on the hillside with some
smoked scallops from your neighbor, Will Nickerson, the fish smoker (1 mile
away - Finyves of Nova Scotia). You send the kids out to pick salad greens and beets from the vegetable garden to add to the lobster dinner. You reminisce about the day’s memories in
the grand lodge over dinner.
After dinner, you
spend some time working the jigsaw puzzle that you are intent on finishing, and
then decide to play a game of scrabble with some of your friends while your
children read their books snuggled on the couches in front of the roaring lodge
fire.
“The place is one of nature’s beauty spots.
Situated on a broad hill overlooking Randal’s Lake, it presents to the
view of
observers the most lovely and picturesque scenery.” (Historical Sketch
of the Argyles, 1941). Imagine stepping back in time and spending a
week with family and friends on a 1200-acre private estate in a grand
hunting
lodge sitting on a hill overlooking your own 300-acre private lake.
The lodge, built in 1931, has retained its
historic charm, complete with the original water tower (fully
functional, but
no longer used). While it is not used
as a hunting lodge any more, most of the furnishings and decorations
are
original. Babe Ruth came hunting and
fishing and purportedly left his fishing rod at the lodge in the
mid-1930’s. During the 1950’s gala lobster-bake
parties were held for the annual Wedgeport Tuna Competitions, and tuna
fishing
teams converged on the lodge from around the world. Since the 1970’s
the lodge has been used as a family summer
vacation compound. We invite you to
come enjoy the pastoral beauty, the rustic magnificence, and the slow
pace of
life at Randal’s lake with your family and friends.
